confused about scales used in model kits
#1
can some one help me sort through the scales used in model kits? I currently have a greek warship made by ERTL/IMAI at 1/45 scale and a roman warship by Academy at 1/250 scale. They both appear to be the same scale coming in at 13" long. I'm interested in buying the Zvezda Carthaginian warship which is listed as 1/72. Does anyone know if this is the same as the other two?

essentially you need to multiply the dimensions by the larger number in the scale - so in the second example 1 inch on the model is 250 inches in real life. A man to scale would be about a 1/4 inch high.

1/72 is somewhere in between, a 6ft man would be about an inch high.

Your Greek Warship at 1/45 works out at about 48 feet long in real life, while the Roman one at 1/250 would be 270 feet long (which is way out for most ships - maybe three times the length of a Quinquereme. Some of the Hellenistic Super ships might have been that big)

So, completely different scales. However...

A bit of google whacking suggests that the Academy Roman ship might be labeled wrong on it's box and is really approx 1/72. So the Zvezda one would match in scale. the

With the Zvezda one is 1/72 proper but it is not a problem that the Academy one is 1/250 even though some of the boxes say it is 1/72 which it is not.

You can make the Academy one into a smaller Liburna support ship.

I did some scale comparisons :
