John Wacher (1927-2012)

Not strictly relevant to Roman army studies -- but John Wacher, one-time Professor of Archaeology at Leicester, has died.

On arriving at University, the first book I ever bought was Wacher's The Towns of Roman Britain (1st edn 1974; 2nd edn 1995). It has long remained the standard handbook, and is still in print after almost 40 years. Not a bad tribute.

Again a great name passed away. My first book about British towns was indeed his major work.
