Roman Maryport - New Excavation
#1
News here
Moi Watson

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Merlot in one hand, Cigar in the other; body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO, what a ride!

This is an interesting excavation indeed and the Roman site of Maryport is of course part of the Hadrian's Wall complex, however it is the western end of the late Raymond Selkirk's 255 line frontier that was created prior to Hadrian very possible by the Emperor Trajan.
The frontier is a line of fortlets every Roman mile going eastward from there to Whitley bay on the east coast,in fact not too far east of here is Scalesceugh Hall where 25 Roman pottery and tile kilns were operated by the 20th and 9th Legions evidence for these tiles are in Carlisle museum with stamps of both legions.
If it were possible some excavation to the east might just confirm this frontier line.

It may not come about in this particular excavation however if any archaeologist were to carry out a search from Maryport on the reciprocal heading of 105 degrees, they may just begin to find evidence and take part in one big re-write on Roman history here in Britain.
