Quote:The Alamanni are usually seen as a sub branch of the Suebi and the Alamannian territory since the end of the migration age became the Duchy of Swabia in Medieval times.I don't think that you can say that Alamanni=Suebi. the Alamanni are referred to as enemies of the Roman empire from different times than the Sueves. When the latter enter Gaul and reach Spain, they are clearly smaller than and different from the Alamanni. These, in turn, fight the Ripuarian Franks for the control of the Middle Rhine valley - the Franks win. Later, the Franks unite and conquer the Alamanni. I think that the 'removal' of the Alamannic regional name within the kingdom of the Franks is to be seen as an insult to the conquered enemy rather than a recognition that the Alamans were in fact Sueves. In modern Germany, 'Schwäbisch' is a dialect related to 'Alamännisch'. Both belong to 'Westoberdeutsch'.
