English to Latin translation please
#1
Hi All,

I would like to translate this poem by W. H. Auden into Latin:

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/roman-wall-blues-2/

What i would like to do eventually is to turn this into a piece of calligraphy, using the Latin Cursive as used on the Vindolanda written fragments. I am undecided whether i want to do the calligraphy on Papyrus, Parchment or a thin wood slat such as some of the Vindolanda stuff is on.
Any help, especially with the translation, but also suggestions as to materials would be greatly appreciated.
And, of course when I get this done, I will take pics and post them here.

Thanks in advance, Smile

Hello Steven,

there might be still mistakes, but I have postet it nevertheless, as I think it might serve as a crutch for the translation attempts of other RAT-members.

VENTVS MADIDVS PER ERICEM FLAT,
PEDICVLOS IN TVNICA MEA ET GRAVIDINEM IN NASO MEO HABEO.

PlVVIA DE CAELO CREPITAT,
MILES VALLI SVM, NON SCIO CVR.

NEBVLA PER LAPIDEM DVRVM ET FRIGIDVM SERPET,
PVELLA MEA IN TVNGRIA EST; SOLVS DORMIO.

AVLVS IN EARVM DOMICILIO VERSAT,
MORES EORVM NON VVLT, FACIEM EORVM NON VVLT.

PISO CHRISTIANVS EST, PISCEM COLIT;
SI PISO POTESTATEM HABEAT OSCVLA NON LICEANT.

PUELLA MEA ANVLVM ME DABAT SED HVNC ABICEBAM,
PVELLAM MEAM ET PRETIVM MEVM VVLT.

CVM VETERANVS CVM SOLVM VNO OCVLO SVM
SOLVM CAELVM SPECTABO.

I only used capital letters and replaced "U" by "V". I did not change the punctuation marks however, as I do not know enough about them in an ancient Latin context; but I know, that the the interpunctuation has to be changed.

Regards,

Thomas

Thomas,

Thank very much Smile , a rather fast reply!
As I don't speak, write or read Latin, ( the reason I put this to the RAT members who do ), I can't critique what you have written, but am glad you tackled this. If anyone has more to add, please feel free to do so - I find language of most kinds fascinating, since to large part it defines how we view the world.
If no one else responds, I'll run with this.
