Yes, this is a hint.

Quote:I'm going for Panticapaeum - Kerch

You missed by about 10km. There were several ancient Greek towns and settlements within the modern Kerch beside metropolitan Panticapaeum.

Ok, what other hint can I offer? Perhaps, this will help.
Point A - the top of the Mitridat Hill, where the Panticapaeum Acropolis stood.

Even though Duncan asked me "to fox us with a Russian example", I will not do it anymore - it seems to be too difficult.

Indeed, even now, much Russian archaeology remains obscure to us westerners! Our handbooks list only Panticapaeum, and no hint of any other townships in the vicinity. Cry

But what about the "Geography" of Ptolemy or "Periplous" of Pseudo-Arrian?

I can't take much credit - that was as close to a giveaway as we've yet had! :-)

However... Where would you find this mysterious person?:

Okay, I'll get rid of the obviously-wrong answer right away: Pompeii? ;-)

Thanks -- I have never seen this fresco before. What -- dare one ask -- is the young lady supposed to be doing?!

I really don't know! And I don't recall the museum display giving any hints either.

She appears to be wearing at least the bottom half of one of those Roman 'bikinis', as found in London and shown on the Piazza Armerina mosaics. Perhaps she's holding a spare pair in her hands?

At a guess, she might be a pearl diver - the sack across her shoulder to hold the oysters. But it's all very obscure...
