Questions about Gallic \"G\" and \"H\"
#16
Brian,

Would it not be better to hammer the ends, with the peak held vertically, to spread the metal at the ends to the right shape, which could then be drilled or punched through? I'm sure that is how mine was made and it would surely avoid stressing the metal in the way that twisting it might in the hands of an inexperienced metal worker.

Hey Crispvs... can you get me pictures of yours from the profile view and looking at the whole helmet from the top down? It would be greatly appreciated.

Also to all the others... Do you object to a brass Brow Guard/Peak Reinforcement of a Gallic "G" or "H" THe Gallic "J" had one and some Italic ones had them as well...

Pictures of acceptable field reenactment Gallic "G" and Gallic "H" Helmets (Especially these parts) Would be greatly appreciated. If you cannot post them here then Private message me and I will give you my direct email. Thank you!

Crispvs.

I was thinking in terms of an inexprienced worker where I suggested this twisting method, and if this is done under heat there will be no stress of the metal, in fact a bit of delicate hammer working could hide afterward the twisting that has been done.

The method that you suggest is where one would need to have a bit of forge skill to be able to achieve that and of course a forge facility, however a simple gas torch could give the heat needed by the other method.

Here is a drawing that will give the basics of what I mentioned earlier about a peak made from sheet steel. The cutting of the metal is done with a hacksaw and finished off with file work, the shape is achieved after making a thick card template around the front of the bowl.
As also mentioned do not forget the central tab that goes into the bowl at the front. I hope this will be of great help to you and maybe others who would like to have a go at this kind of work.

Here is a picture of one of the Imperial Italic D's that I have made in the past the original of course had a bronze peak similar to mine made from sheet metal not cast.

With my copy I braised the ends of the peak but when we check out the original helmet the peak may well have been made by the method I show in my drawings, in fact a good look at the Robinson Book pictures does tend to show that I might be correct.

With a forge, one could make one of these from iron flatbar though?

That is very true and indeed may be the way that Crispvs mentions the lobes of his reinforce were done, the reason however that I show in drawings how I have made these reinforce fixing points is that in all the years I made helmets or armour I never got around to having a forge. Would love to start again but NO.

I decided to post pictures of my Broken Brow Guard/Peak Reinforcement. This is what was on the helmet to begin with. You can see where a welder tried to "Cold Weld" it but the weld failed as anticipated. To have it hot welded I was told by 3 different professional welders that it wasn't worth what it would cost to have it welded and still no guarantees on a weld holding.

It is 20mm Wide at the front most part.

Has anyone seen the DSC Gallic "J" on their facebook page? They also have a picture of a historical find with a brass Peak Reinforcement. THis is what I would like to do to my "H" and "G". I have 2 "H" helmets and on "G".

Comments on the pictures and this thread are still welcome. Thanks.

Patrick

I am very sorry to say that other than giving instructions or drawings of how to, I have retired completely from making Helmets and indeed most other things.

However I would still say no bronze or brass peak for Gallic G or H or it is going to look odd.

Thanks again Brian... One more question. It I were to make them myself, how do you go about polishing them? Or do you just "Tin" them?

Patrick.

If you do make them and any heat has been applied to the metal they will need cleaning up but nothing to drastic realy not polished, in fact all you want is to get hold of an emery covered foam pad medium grade to rub them down a bit they would only need tinning if the whole helmet were being done.

I recently purchased a Gallic H from Armae and it arrived with the peck guard broken. Armae is replacing it for me but they did offer me the option for a replacement of the broken piece. Armae is just the best vendor i have dealt with so far. Is it possible to the original manufacturer can provide a replacement?
I would not replace it with a cast brass piece unless there is evidence it used to be done by the Romans. Then again I can tell you as a retired US Marine, troops will Improvise adapt and overcome equipment failure by doing the craziest things. I dont see why ancient troop would be deferent in this respect. Especially if they think it is cool, so by doing what you say you might just get a really unique helmet.
