Opinion on Helmet Type Please
#1
May I enquire from the learned membership which type of helmet you think Insus is wearing?

Thank you in advance.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Merlot in one hand, Cigar in the other; body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO, what a ride!

I must admit that Insus's helmet has always reminded me of an Apulo Corinthian - the three plumes I suppose, and the suggestion of a sloping brim at the front!

But that's pretty doubtful, to say the least. I think Graham Sumner reconstructs him wearing a Coolus, with the side feathers - although the plumes seem to jut out from the helmet bowl rather than being mounted at the sides. Could be something like a Witcham Gravel cavalry type, perhaps, with extra plumes instead of the huge 'boss' decorations?

But it's always surprisingly difficult to match helmets shown on reliefs to actual examples known from archaeology. Perhaps this means we don't know as much as we like to think we know, or something...
