CRAZY COALMINE
#1
It has just been mentioned on the evening news here in the north of England that there are plans to create an opencast coalmine at Wittonstall in county Durham, however Whittonstall is at the junction of two Roman Roads that lead to the fort of Vindomora (Ebchester) in county Durham.

There is also the fact that a Roman fort stands at Whittonstall at the junction of these roads one of which continues on to Corbridge (not the Dere Street for that goes directly to Bywell and not Corbridge)and the other Roman road travels towards Hexham in Northumberland. Is it not time that English Heritage stepped into the debate to explain just what indeed scheduled monuments are all about, for if this fort is not scheduled Why Not.

I allways thought that it was thier responsability to look after such "scheduled monuments"....or is it?
If not then this opens a whole can of worms for who is responsible for what and its protection.
