Samurai Armor at Boston MFA
#1
Irene Hahn, founder of the Roman History Reading Group on FB, was good enough to alert me to this new exhibit opening at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Although not Roman, many of you might find this to be of interest. It is one of the best opportunities to see a fantastic collection of Samurai Armor outside of Japan. And for those of us who can not make it to Boston, the exhibit catalog itself looks like a great book.

The MFA is a most excellent museum. I'm glad to be of Massachusetts and am "close enough" to go there often. Their own Samurai armor collection is just fantastic, as is their Egyptian.

I aim to see this new Samurai exhibit soon. There is also another Samurai exhibit at the Currier museum of art in Manchester NH, about an hour and a half north of Boston, which I also hope to go to.

If anyone's ever in MA, not only is the MFA a great place to hit, but of course Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, which unfortunately is closing Dec. 2013, the collection moving to Worcester Art Museum.

Also, there is the Walter Vincent Smith collection of Samurai arms and armor in Springfield, MA which is also quite excellent.

Good to know -- Thanks Andy.

I was last in Boston in 1978, when we were on tour with the kabuki play Chushingura. The director and several of the cast members made a point of visiting the MFA to view items in the Japanese collection.

With so much armor in the area, clearly I need to get back there again.

For those in The Netherlands, the Wereldmuseum in Rotterdam still (until May 25th) has a very nice exhibition about samurai armour too (no doubt smaller than the Boston one):

Smaller? Perhaps, but no less stunning. (Would love to see this exhibit as well.) Some really nice examples on display there, particularly the helmets. When it came to headgear, Japanese artistic imaginations ran wild.

There was, many years ago, a special exhibit in San Francisco of Japanese kabuto (helmets) that was simply amazing. The exhibit catalog, long out of of print, is worth seeking out if you have an interest in Japanese armor or art.

I got to see the exhibit a little while ago. It was Glorious. It just closed this past weekend, unfortunately. But there ought to be lots of exhibition catalogs still available (online MFA store?) which is equally Glorious.

The exhibit I think was equal, nearly beating the huge Samurai exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in NYC a few years ago. Just astonishing, glorious pieces everywhere between both of these exhibitions.

The mounted and standing pieces were also tremendous and very impressive, well done. Seeing these guys on the field must have been a real sight to behold.

And for those who could not make it to this exhibit, you might consider the museum in Dallas:

They also have a very active Face Book page:
