The Lord Howard de Walden collection was willed to the National Museum of Wales when he passed away. This collection included an Imperial Gallic 'J' type helmet (at the time the only one known, and described in Russell-Robinsons seminal book on Roman Armour and now on display in the National Roman Legionary Museum at Caerleon). There is also an auxiliary infantry helmet (so-called), which was examined by the British Museum and pronounced 'pukka'. However, a supposed Etruscan helmet, with gold attachments, was examined using X-rays and was shown to be a 'pastiche' - made up of genuine but actually unrelated pieces. de Walden was collecting in the early part of the 20th century when modern methods of analysis did not exist. The irony is that these 'bits' which was cobbled together are individually genuine and quite important in their own right!
