Sassanid Five Device (Panjagan)
#1
Hi all,

Quote:To ensure greater speed and volume, a device know as five device (panjagan), allowing to knight to fire five shots with a single shot. This made archery particularly deadly, since an archer could fire five more arrows before the first set had reached its first target. This implies that the arrows must have been prearranged for rapid access in groups of five in the quiver, contrasted in regular Sassanian way of holding three arrows in the same had as the bow.
Sassanian Elite Cavalry AD 224-642 By Kaveh Farrokh p. 14.

Osprey artist, Angus McBride pictured panjagan in the following picture. (middle)

Is there any definition of it? In the same book writer claims there is nothing remaining about this mysterious device. Its a pity to lost information of such ingenious device.

Thanks Renatus. It clearly defines a fast shooting technique rather than a device.

Agree, it doesn't look like a practical crossbow at all.
