Stone\'s Alexander
#1
This week's Time magazine carries a picture of Colin Firth as Alexander the Great in Oliver Stone's upcoming film. Marvel of marvels, he's wearing what looks like a very creditable replica of the cuirass on the famous Alexander mosaic. Let's hope the rest of the project shows the same attention to detail.

With Oliver Stone in charge of production, I wouldn't hold out much hope for historical accuracy.

I'd say there could still be some hope. Saw a couple of pictures of the actors in gear, with Farrell in a nice lion's head helmet, complete with crest and feathers. The rest of the cavalry seemed to be wearing very creditable boeotian helmets and very sturdy lances. Best of all(dare I even say it), no stirrups! Here are links to the pics:
Nice. It looks like the costume dept. did its homework on that one.
Remains the problem of the director..
I fear we are going to be blessed by another one of Stone's politically correct statements.
Meaning Alexander as nothing else but an imperialist warmonger and so on.. Same old, same old. But I guess I'll watch this one, just for the costumes. They really look OK.

Fantastic! Examine that second picture. The helmet, the outfit, even the horse's leopardskin jacket are all taken directly from Peter Connolly's painting of Alexander at the Granicus in "The Greek Armies" (I think it's also in "Greece and Rome at War"). Even the guy riding next to him with the wreath around his Boeotian helmet with the drooping plume is taken right from the painting. Only the crest and plume colors are different. How long have we been demanding that filmmakers do exactly this?

They seem to have worked on all the details. Colin Farrell's hairstyle looks like Alex, the horses bits are good imitations of macedonian bits although certainly not as cruel, the boots are OK too... Really nice. Is there anymore pictures somewhere?

I too was shocked to see pictures of the guy in an accurate looking Linothorax-type armor...YAY! Of course, seeing the movie itself we'll have to wait to see if these people did any kind of homework. (I'm holding my praise)

As for Stone...I wonder what kind of Conspiracy Theories he'll have...Was there a Grassy Knoll? Maybe that's something to do with the Gordian Knot...Gordian Knoll??

It could be worse, this could have been directed or inspired or something by the late Stanley Kubrick...Imgaine what he could have done. :Confusedhudder::
....."Alexander Now", "Full Metal Linothorax"?
Kubrick didn't direct "Apocalyse Now," Coppola did. And what's wrong with "Full Metal Jacket?"
Whatever the faults of "Spartacus" Kubrick gave one of the best battle scenes (based on the available scholarship of the time and technology) as well as 18th Century warfare in "Barry Lyndon," to say nothing of World War I in "Paths of Glory." As a respecter of history and a scruplous caretaker of accuracy of period, Kubrick ranks as one of the best directors of battle scenes ever.
P.S. Andy: I really liked "Gordian Knoll;" I can't wait for that! What I really wonder is if Stone is going to feature the Afgans who turned Alexander back as an object lesson for today.

Edited by: Togaman at: 11/7/03 7:56 pm

I was about to say that, Wade, well done !
I'd just like to add that Kubrick hasn't the total control on Spartacus, it was in Kirk Douglas' hands. Maybe the film would have been even better withjout such restriction!
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

you take me too seriously ;D

I know Kubrick didn't direct "Apocolypes Now", I was just adding in the title with the Spoof.

Yes, for it's time, "Spartacus" was good.

Nothing "wrong" with Full Metal Jacket, just incredibly disturbing...And I like the idea of a Centurio much the same as R. Lee Ermey in FMJ....Only he gets to beat the snot out of his men with a vitis cane..and a big, obnoxious red crest on his helmet.

As for Afghans...Hmmmm....I suppose he could also use Alexander and his "Daddy Issues" as another moral lesson? Sorta like overburdening dads at sports?

"Alex! Kill that guy better!"
"Yes, Sir" ::mumble I'll show you, oneofthesedays::
