Pictures from Roman Market Days

Saturday got almost completely rained-out. The film crew showed up, but they had little to film. I showed off my riveted maille. Sunday was better. George Metz organized a drill demo and the Ludus Magnus gladiator troop performed. The quantity and quality of the vendors was a disappointment. One exception was a lady selling Samian ware. Her work is very good. To see examples go to:
Nice pics...

can you give a general price range on the Samian ware, since it's not listed on her site?

I've asked her for a price quote. The few pieces that I saw were in the tens of dollars.

Yes, her work is nice but, if we're talking about Samian ware, I would describe her production as beign between 'based on' and 'inspired by', never as replicas!
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

I got the following price list from Julia, the owner of "VenetianCat". It seems to me she may be interested in making more accurate reproductions.

The prices are as follows:
Plate:appx. 9.5 in, or 24 cm diameter-$25.00
Low Bowl: appx 8" or 20 cm diameter-$25.00
Drinking vessel: apx.3" diameter or 7 cm-$10.00
Complete sets (plate, bowl, cup) are $5.00 off, for a total of $55.00
Prices do not include shipping and handling, but will be sent USPS,Priority Mail, which is the least expensive.
Red and Black are the same price.

Most orders are custom orders, and take between 2-3 weeks to fill. I have to work a "regular" job to support my art profession, and thus, unfortunately do not have the time to build up an inventory (but I'm trying, really I am)
Large orders will of course take bit longer.

For payment, I accept cheques (with name, address, and phone number) or US Postal money orders.
Please feel free to visit my website at: venetiancat.com and click on Terra Sigillata. You may also find other pieces that interest you. I DO give discounts for large orders that include other items.
For more about me, scroll down the page, and click on the hyperlinked phrase. It will take you to our personal homepage.

Hope to be doing business with you. Terra Sigillata/Samianware is my FAVORITE!
Julia, the maker of the samian ware had trouble joining/posting on RAT so she asked me to post this for her in answer to Aitor:

I would like to say that he is partly correct: Many of my pieces are based on historical designs and forms, were not intended a reproductions, and as such, are art pieces which have a "soul of their own".. However, my dinner set is historically accurate, both in dimensions and technique of applying the terra sigillata. I would like to also know what historical sources he bases his assessment on?
"Never as replicas" is incorrect.
(SEE BELOW)
ARCHEOLOGICAL INFORMATION:
Plain Plate: Ludowici, AD 160-230
Bowl: Dragendorff 32, AD 160-230
Cup: Mediterranean area, 1st Century AD
Julia,
Short posts tend to be harsh-looking and I tried to say too many things in a pair of words, sorry!
A few years ago I had learnt by heart many of the Samian (known also as 'Terra Sigillata', another neologism like 'lorica segmentata' ) ware forms in the several classifications but I need now to re-take my books.
In a British context, 'Samian ware' means mainly 'French Samian ware' but there were three other different kinds of Samian ware only in the Western part of the Empire (i.e. Italian, Spanish and Tunisian Samian wares) and, moreover, there are tipological classifications inside each of them depending on regional workshops or cronological grounds!
To explain it briefly, you can find the simplest form of all, the so-called ritterling 8 bowl elsewhere and they all will look akin on drawings but the characteristics of the paste and slip will vary dramatically from point to point and from one period to another one!
Apology wholeheartedly accepted no problem.

There is indeed an incredible variation, and it's so hard to know where to begin!
You are quite right about the designs all looking the same yet varying greatly. I have tried as best I can to base my pieces on the many pictures of museum pieces that I have as well as what I have seen at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
Of course, being the artist that I am, I get carried away with the incredibly beautiful designs.
