A twenty day route march, well they didn't make it all way to Rome, but that's still quite a hike.

Does anyone know if any of these young men are on the list ? They have a lot of experiences to relate. These guys need to write about this because we can all benefit.

Well, FLAVIUS PROMOTUS is (look at this thread: p200.ezboard.com/fromanar...&stop=33). He's the man who carries the vexillum.

Actually, I'm a quite disappointed that they didn't tell us before what they were doing next. I thought we'd live in the age of communication....
Yes, I was surprised too about it: Flauius Promotus told me only they had to attend an event in Trento and then they wanted to reach Roma and train+march+fight together with us at our camp... I did not know they were going to do it by marching! Anyway, his e-maill address was recently "dead" and I could not reply for a date with them: what a pity, maybe next time!
Great march commilitones, great march!
I saw them again on TV and one of them said: "To be honest, I'd never do it again."

Just to set a few things right - I did NOT throw the vexillum into the river Isar !!!
It was the Weltenburg-beer standard which touched the waves, not the legion's vexillum ! And nobody dropped, it was blown into the river by a sudden and powerful gale.
So it was neither my fault nor my vexillum

We cannot pass on many information concerning the Regensburg-Trento march, now, since the relevant persons (including me) have to prepare for a trip to several Greek monasteries and excavations. We will be back in the first week of October, and maybe we can tell you more, then.

To be honest, most of us need a short time away from any Roman army matters, anyway
There were many great moments, but on the whole we all got a fair share of strain, pain, stink and stress, and we just need some time to recover. Our feet have recovered well (only small inconveniences left), the shoulders feel much better, but the mental energy and initiative is still low. All were pretty tired in the end...

Aitor, the head of our ship may indeed look a little strange according to Roman standards, but the man who carved it used the dragon (lion?) heads of the Neumagen wine galleys as a model, and they are most likely late Roman (late 3rd, or early 4th century ?). Not every ship with a dragon's head has to be a Vikings' vessel

I'm impressed at Regensberg Uni- a fully functioning ship, a huge trek in full Roman kit...what are the next plans?
And where do we get a brewery as a sponsor?

Flauius, it was a fine experiment and any roman reenactor should have to try it at least once in the life (like the pilgrimage to the Mecca ), since that fully equipped marching was a so important part of the roman military life. My longest fully equipped march was about 10Km, so, I've to do the "big one" yet... I hope before getting old...
I think you guys did a great job!
When the strain has worn off and your energy has returned I'm sure you will all look back at this as an experience of a lifetime. Imean, apart from our avatar Junkelmann, who ever crossed the Alps in modern times on foot in Roman gear? And as far as the 21st century is concerned, you guys are the only ones so far.
