RAT is a fair forum where everyone's views can be expressed without bias from other members. In this respect, RAT is unique. I once joined another forum that concentrated on "steppe history," but it was very Turko-centric and tried to discount the Iranian influence on Middle Asia. Here, on RAT, we "allies and enemies" of Rome can find open discussions. And that is important. mile:

Well, not everyone would say RAT is open and friendly. I won't divulge any details but I've read through several years of mod posts and have seen what's happened and why it happened when the site did drive members away.

I think it's partly because it's well managed and established, and partly because as Alan said, it's fairly open.

Well I also think the site is very open, the people tend to behave and have good discussions, I did learn a lot on this forum and this is due to the fact that you get your answers from very knowledgeable people

I think that what is great is that you would really get your answers from specialists, and I will not give names here so that no one gets frustrated being forgotten,

I will give an example though without name, I had a discussion with s friend regarding some problem and I posted here after that I said "X said that I was right" he :" I don't believe X said , how comes that you know him" then I explained him about the RAT he was impressed with the names he found here

I think that RAT is the best forum I was a member of, unless TOD (The oil Drum ) a forum that is not existing anymore

I believe one of the reasons RAT is popular is that many of its members share the same drive of "Getting it right" and are willing to share their knowledge. There is also constructive criticism on things produced, although I will admit to a slight difference in attitude towards commercial makers/vendors such as yourself and forum members. Makers/vendors are expected to do a lot of research if they are to be taken seriously on this forum and to be able to back up any and all claims they make to sell their products.
There have been rifts for sure, mainly in those areas where fantasy or conjunction has overtaken science can and will fur fly. But on the whole, things are pretty friendly and I do hope we keep it that way.

I echo the sentiments that everyone seems mostly friendly and fair. Discussions do of course get heated, but that is because everyone is very committed to getting the most accurate and most complete picture that we can. I think that is commendable.

I think the most impressive thing about this forum, however, is how evidence-based everyone seems to be. Almost everyone focuses on sourced data and inferences supported by that data when making their points. Even the conjecture I've seen on this forum so far is well-reasoned, whether I agree with it or not.

I think that willingness to share set us apart from the start. Many other forums (those in English) are either closed or unwilling to share the results of research.
I also like to think that our (uncommon) rule of including real names and a policy of discouraging 'popular postings' (in language and in images) which you see on many other forums, sets us a aprt as more member-friendly.

I would agree with Alanus. The ability to openly, yet respectfully, express opinions, I believe, is the reason. Also, the ability to use satire is refreshing.

I think this site is unbeatable for the expert but open-minded responses/help I've received, particularly from Nathan Ross, with very specific questions to do with my 4th century studies. The moderation has been excellent and the forum's scope seems to allow for a really wide range of interests and levels of expertise, from re-enacting out in the field to drilling down historical details in the study.

For the same reasons the others gave ... people here are insightful and eager to help.

But personally, most of my life has been spent around common blue-collar folks who have no interest in any of this stuff. It's nice to hear from other people who find ancient history as interesting as I do.
