Coello does not mention the 264 men. I have to ask Nathan who his source is for Columbia 7 188 numbering 264 men. Coello does state “In this field, theory is all too easily codified as fact.”
Now in relation to the supposed 264 cavalry vexillation of Columbia 7 188, Vegetius states one officer commanded 32 men, so by taking a squadron at 33 men divided by the supposed 264 cavalry equates to eight squadrons each of 33 men. If the legion has 10 cohorts then the remaining two squadrons would give a total of 330 cavalry. Most cavalry numbers are 300 or 360, so rounding could be playing its part.
So we could be looking at some academic making a good guess or the combination of 264 men with 33 men per squadron could be a red-herring. My Pythagorean research including the tribal system and other empirical data indicates it is a red herring, but I want to be 100 percent sure.
