Participants wanted, first \'all late Roman\' Event
#46
Ok...

To cut a long story short, I've called Archeon about their plans for next season.
According to them, there's a Late Medieval group booked for the Easter 2004 weekend. The only free weekend would be that of april 24/25.

Dan, all this was told me by Hans Siebelink, their Event Coordinator.

The message he sent to Alain is explained by their wish to precede the Roman Days (from Augustus 5th onwards) with a 'Migration Week' (July 30 to August 4). This has to do with budget as well. I've explained to them that most groups are booked solid for that part of the season (their alternative was a week(end) after the Roman Days), and that it would be very hard if not impossible to get any large group of re-enactors prepared to go to Archeon.

Of course, maybe those meaning to attend the Stoneleigh Late Roman weekend are interested in going to Archeon the week before?

So that's how things seem to be at the moment.
not Easter for sure for the legions event 2004 in Italy... My preferred month is May, but it's to be decided yet, as you know, it not depends totally of me...

Anyway for the "late" legions event you propose, count me and my brother too for now!
I don't think that we'll be able to send any minimally decent expedition to Archeon for the dates they favour!
As date gets closer, maybe we'll be able to say something clearer but we cannot engage now! (Easter was a completely different, albeit colder, choice!)

Titus, we're again engaged for Tarraco Viva on next May !
Let us know whn you have a fixed date, please!

Aitor

P.S. Even in case that we cannot make our late meeting next year, we could start thinking on having it at 2005!
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

Good evening,

Just to explain that Stoneleigh cannot really be called a new event because it happened last year. To define the concept would be contentious but it could be described as emphasising the history and reducing the beer and bash brigade. It could be described as that .....

The new added empahsis on the Late Roman period is to be welcomed. There are lots of Late Romans out there and we all need to share experience and ideas. I'm looking forward to the event, but please let me know if you would like to come. I can put you in contact with the EH organiser to sort out details. The more the merrier.

Comitatus would like to do an event in Europe, and we'll endeavour to leave Easter 2005 free if somebody could definately book the date venue etc. And sort it out soon!Easter in North Yorkshire may be considered cold. Easter on the continent must be swimsuit weather.
Ave,
I may have a solution for next year. The archeo-site of Bliesbruck (on french-german border) wants to organise an event with us (Foederati) on august 2005, but the coordinators wanted to get more people. If you like to, I can write to them and propose the possible coming of many more late Romans... (even if not German or French).
Hi Owain,
Glad you found the RAT forum. There should be Late Roman re-enactors in the US. I've been discussing a draco with someone, and there are pictures on this forum of Late Romans, I'm sure! Some may be part of groups doing 1st C. stuff, though..
Hi everybody,

This is a very old thread, but it looks like we may have a Late Roman event at Archeon next year!

The provision dates for this event are the weekend of 30/31st july 2005 at Archeon, The Netherlands.

Several groups from The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and Spain have already expressed their interest, but not all have confirmed.

To be continued...
Hi Dan, Aitor, Robert, & All,
Please consider me and my unit, the Secunda Britannica, or "Secunda" as we call ourselves, for the planning of your events. We are located in the state of Georgia in the USA. Right now there are only two of us, but we have big hearts and much courage and hope, so maybe some day we'll grow larger...
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, draconarius, Secunda Brittanica
Edited by: Lucius Aurelius Metellus at: 12/1/04 1:20 am

Robert,
Amazing. When I started this thread about a Late Roman Archaeon event, I never dreamed I couldn't go to it because I would be sitting in a log cabin in Kentucky!

How about talking Royal Dutch Airlines (or whatever they call it), to "sponsor" bringing about 20 late Romans from the U.S. to the Archaeon. We could also furnish several leather tents, and a complete cataphract armor. Does the Dutch military bring planes to the U.S. for anything? I recall that the German Bundeswehr once brought a bunch of American WWI reenactors over for the open house festival of just one German Panzergrenadier regiment, but their airforce made runs to the U.S. all the time to keep their forces training in the U.S. well stocked with German Bier and Bratwurst.

I did only one event at the Archeon but it was a blast, and great people staff it!

Dan
Did you ever contact the Dutch guys that do early Franks? They do a lot of other periods at the Archaeon, so probably already know about it. I supplied them with ridge helmets which they made more "barbarian" by removing the cheek pieces and neckguards. They have some of my first Deepeeka late Roman dished shields too! Got them from me only a few weeks before I left Europe!
Hi Dan,

Well, we kinda tried to get things done, but for a long time we thought it would never happen. can't say anything is written in stone today either, but I think the strat is made.

Yes, you could try and talk to KLM (Royal Dutch airlines, indeed, but a part of Air France of late ), though I doubt that company wopuld be prepared to do it. There are Dutch military planes flying to the US, but i lack the contacts.

Did I ever contact those Franks? Well, I asked you more than once for an address...
But if you meant the Teuxandrii, they're from Belgium (but speak Dutch) and I already contacted them. They seem like a very nice lot.
