This just showed up over in FB. It is a common fish in the Med, but one fellow who actually eats it says it is the intestines that might be the hallucinogenic part. Can you imagine bottling this in garum? Funny thing is I have never seen this mentioned in any history, or in novels or mysteries as plot elements. Makes you wonder if Caligula got a high dose of it, or overdose?
