I`m slowly, but surely getting myself kitted out, with kit and armor etc, for a legionary that would have been in briton, between 30ad and 60ad. What were the the types of footwear that I should be looking for. Are there a few types I could choose from perhaps?

Thanks.
Geoff.

A good place to look first for pretty much everything is Legio XX's website.

For example, here's their page on footwear:

Good hunting (and googling!)

Caliga (Military Sandals), there's a number of variations probably something from Mainz would work for you, also Closed boots (weather proof) again from Mainz...

There is a report on CD available from Offenbach Leather museum and can be found here:

"And the four bare walls stand on the seashore. a wreck a skeleton a monument of that instability and vicissitude to which all things human are subject. Not a dwelling within sight, and the farm labourer, and curious traveller, are the only persons that ever visit the scene where once so many thousands were congregated." T.Lewin 1867

Technically, caligae are boots, not sandals, as they extend up the ankle to provide support to the ankle and lower leg (the normal difference between a shoe and a boot) and substantial grip on the underside of the sole. It is the openwork nature of them which tends to cause people to think of them as sandals. They are thus best thought of as openwork boots, rather than sandals.

Incidentally, this thread should have been posted in the Re-enactment and reconstruction forum. Perhaps a moderator might like to see that it is moved to the right place.
