Trip to Germany
#1
Fratres,
My wife and I are trying to plan a trip to Germany this early December. Planning to go to Mainz, Trier and Cologne. Is there any advice that you can share for seeing the roman sites there? In researching I've noticed that there's not a whole lot in the English language at the museums. My two favorite Legions are Legio I Minervia (stationed in Bonna) and Legio II Augusta (Mainz). Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Thomas

My modest compilation of Roman sites on GoogleMyMaps includes the sites and their locations, which may give you a sense of where things are. It is not at all comprehensive, but folks on RAT have been helping get it together.

As you are going to Trier, I would recommend you visit Archäologiepark Römische Villa Borg. It is a stunning recreation of a Roman villa on the site it was excavated. Just google the pictures to get a first impression. Certainly worth the drive!

PS my wife was most taken by the cats paws imprinted in the discovered tiles there, proving to her Romans had introduced domestic cats ....

Robert,
Yes, Trier is one of the cities we plan on visiting. I'll have to look that up as I haven't heard of it. Thanks for the info!
Question to all - Why is it so hard to find information on Legio I Minervia compared to a lot of other legions?
Peace,
Thomas

Looked up the place you mentioned. When I saw the pictures of It I was blown away! Will definitely Have to try and work it into our plans. Thanks again for your advice. I wasn't even aware that that place existed!

Rest assured, Thomas
you'll be hittin the right places. Wink

Mainz :
http://web.rgzm.de/en.html
The RGZM main location is under re-organisation. So better check that website for closed departments of that RGZM.

The roman ships' monument near the Hilton hotel (Löhrstrasse) has just been restored -- its a 1:1 resin copy of one of the ships that have been found on that very location.

A real model, however is on display in the "Museum für antike Schiffahrt" /"Museum for Ancient Seafares" , part of the RGZM at a ifferent place..

They have a sizeable Roman Theater there , too. (Railwaystation "Römisches Theater)
http://www.theatrum.de/mainz.html

I think they also have been putting some of the finds of their local Isis-sanctuary on display right there on location at the Römerpassage.
Open: Mo-Sat ,10-18.00 MEZ

Monumental Roman Remains:
Porta Nigra (> CityMuseum)
Constantine's Basilica (Remains of the Imperial Palace)
Kaiserthermen /Emperors Baths
Barbarathermen /Barbara's Baths
(The latter has just been reopened)
Amphitheater
Viehmarkt-Thermen (Cattle Market's Baths)
The (roman !) bridge over the river Mosel.

Except the amphitheatre, which is on the far side beyond the Main Railway Station, all "objects" are not too
distant of each other.
Some of the minor places:
Sanctuary Altbachtal
Sanctuary Herrenbrünnchen.
Both near the Amphitheater.

And I haven't counted in a couple of worthwhile places around Trier:
The remains of the Imperial Palace at KONZ/Contionacum ( cemetry) upstream Mosel, near the mouth of the river Saar.
The remains of the Imperial Palace at Pfalzel/Palatiolum. (other bank of river Mosel -- slightly downstream)
The sanctuary at Tawern, opposite bank of river Saar, near / Konz.(>SEast) On a mountain.
Late roman fortification of Neumagen/Dhron/Noviomagus Treverorum downstream river Mosel (ca. 20-30km)
on the same bank , guarding the late-roman approaches to Trier along river Mosel.

I think I've forgotten some of the "roman sensations" of both Mainz and Trier, but I'm getting old.

Last but not least :

....and literally dozens of Musea (choose your poison):
http://www.museenkoeln.de/home/pages/2375.aspx?s=2375

Since it's been a very long time since I last was at Cologne, I can't judge the distances of the places I mentioned. Also I don't know whether there currently are other roman remains worth visiting.

Hope this helps

Siggi did a good job indeed I think that I would have have a little bit less on the list as he has, the distances in koeln are not very short I was there last year, took me a little more time than expected to walk arround.

One more think to add:

since you come in December time frame do visit the "weihnachtsmarkt" in each town you are in will be an interesting visit after 5 pm

Aye,
We've been thinking those very same thoughts. Thinking of consolidating our trip to Trier, Bonn and Cologne. That way we'll have more time in each of those cities. To let you know, even though I'm very interested in the roman army, my favorite legions are II Avgvsta and I Minervia. Mostly interested in where they were stationed and there history. Can't thank you all enough for your input and advice!
Cheers,
Thomas

In Cologne, the subterranean praetorium, and the underground sewage channel to the Rhine is a must.

In Mainz, pay a visit to the Museum für Antike Schiffahrt.

Eleatic,
I have the Praetorium on my list already, but not the sewage tunnel. I'll have to look into that one. Thanks for the tip. At this time don't know if we will be able to make Mainz...
