Forum conversion
#16
Ciao Jasper,

is there a way to get back with old private messages?

Hi Luca
As I warned on the old forum and on Facebook: I tried to convert PMs, but that didn't work. If you have essential messages, I can retrieve them, but it's somewhat of a PITA to do...

Hi, Jasper

You did an amazing amount of difficult work. On that point, congratulations.

I hesitate in pointing this out but I need to. The whole point of RAT is sharing knowledge and external sources to help members. Also, we had a way of "thanking" each other for this sharing. To me, the "Thank You" system was, in essence, a record of a member's "worth." A member could accumulate 4,000 or 5,000 posts, reaching higher in rank, but he or she could do this by posting short, ineffectual, and sometimes dumb, comments. In essence, the posts often had little value, and that person accumulated very few "Thank Yous." At the other extreme, a member could write fewer posts, essentially informational and helpful, and receive a higher number of "Thank Yous."

In this new format, the "Thank Yous" are gone. (I also got demoted, and I'll not live long enough to accumulate the higher number of posts needed to reach my old rank. As is, with the loss of deserved "Thank Yous," plus the elimination of "Current Topics" (a longer and easier page than "Today's"), I feel that I'm too old a fart to butt my head against the cyber-wall.

Very Sincerely,
Alanus

Hi Alan
A few things:
  • It wasn't really an option to keep going with RAT the way it was. It had a much higher footprint on the server, less extensibility and less features. Either we were going to require an upgrade to both the underlying system to old RAT and the forum system - likely maintaining the footprint - or move away to what's been consistently rated as the best free forum system. So I chose the latter. Just wanted to make it clear I'm not putting everyone (myself included) through a headache for fun or on a whim... Inevitably that'll have some results not everyone is happy with (again, myself included)
  • As for the ranks: I wanted to avoid a situation where we'd have lots of people running around with custom titles. As RAT's coming up to its 15th birthday, there are quite a few with a lot of posts... Luckily the ranks really are meaningless, as you say yourself, producing lots of grunts and posting those has the same effect as posting lots of well thought-out and eloquent responses. So...
  • I agree with you on the the thank-you system. Fortunately, this system has one too. See the thumbs-up icon to the bottom left? Works the same way, except you can also add a reason why you appreciate someone's post. I will see if I can transfer member's thank-you rate on the previous forum, but there's a limit to the amount of time I'm willing to spend on any one feature of this forum.

If you're resetting your password, it's essential you're requesting that password for the email account linked to your user account. It won't work otherwise, or will have unexpected side-effects...

Hi Jasper, I am now back on - as you can see Smile

Basic inadvertency on my part - on the reset password page the "Reset" button is much more obvious than the "Submit" button and I was going round in circles reseting it each time.

I did not realise that! Thanks. Maybe logging in with Facebook will change that?

I didn't realise it when I entered that post but Jasper deals with this point in his OP under 'Usernames'.  If you follow his link, you can change your username to whatever you want.

Happy New Year!!!

Any chance of restoring access to my primary account?

I realize this is a spare time project, but I sent four emails back in late October/early November and aside from a response to the first one, I never received a response to the other three. The email address on file for Condottiero Magno, hasn't been accessible since 2013, and I recall updating it back then - something I did on other frequented fora. It's possible, though unlikely, that I may have forgotten to update it here, so is it possible to reset access to it?

Links in posts as recent as December 2013 (eg. end of A /'new/' look at the linothorax) to other threads seem to have broken with the 'upgrade.'  I obviously do not appreciate information which I took time to create being destroyed without my consent, any more than when an earlier 'upgrade' replaced non-ASCII characters with gibberish ... but I drifted away from this forum due to the lack of respect and the increasingly narrow focus on Roman soldiers, and its not my server, so Jasper and the remaining members get to set the house rules.

I have not checked this forum frequently since 2013, but I hope that these old posts have some value. I now have a blog on books, swords, and the curious things humans do with them.

Hi Tongar,
I reset the email address to the requested email address on your original account on November 9th and emailed you about it.

Hi Sean
I can assure you that, had I been able to convert the forum without any issues, I would've done so. I can also assure you I've never converted the forum just because I felt like it. In fact, it's a fantastic pain in the ass to do, but I've always tried to convert to a system I hope will allow the forum to grow and thrive. To be honest, I think the previous system was a bad choice and we were getting to the point of having to convert one or another. If any content was altered or deleted, I am truly sorry, but I couldn't afford to pay several thousand euros to get the forum converted by some of the specialist sites out there - assuming they actually do what they profess to do.

The current one has won 'best forum software' several years in a row, so I'm hopeful we can keep going for years and years without conversions.

Does the fact that you deleted your response mean you figured it out, Tongar?
