Helmet Re-work
#16
Matt, did you rivet in the neck guard edging where it butts up against the bowl? Can't quite make that out.
Legio XX
Do you mean the little tabs that hold on the brass edging? If so, the answer is yes:
I am deeply impressed and I think I have the same helmet; IIRC, did You not mention the removal of the infamous brass rings on the upper side of the neck guard, but I think it is the same:

how did you treat the surface of the helmet, so that she does not shine in such a way any longer? And, does anybody know the meaning of the round marks that were (instead of the rings misinterpreted by Deepeeka) on the original Mainz helmet?
Thanks
Hallo Uwe,

Yes- that's the same helmet as mine. I actually forgot to mention the brass rings as I removed them very soon after I bought the helmet. I dulled the finish with a mild abrasive pad (Scotch Brite by 3M) for scrubbing pots and pans. You do have to work for a while to remove the shine, but it works well.
I recently reworked my Deepeeka Gallic I, which had the same basic problems as your helm. My chief problem was replacing the "Gallic" cheek guards with the more appropriate panelled "Italic" ones.
As for the rings, they were misinterpreted by the Indians.
They should have been broad, flat headed rivets, similar to the type used on most apron straps. I went to someone as expert as I could find to get an answer, Michael Simpkins.
This is definitely not a Deepeeka helmet. I'm curious, what Indian (I'm assuming this) manufacturer is this helmet from?

I have a Gallic I 'Acquincum' that needs some re-work. My work schedule does not permit me the luxury of time, so I'd like to know if you are interested in doing the job. Please contact me at [email protected] .
I have an Aquincum too, and I'd be very interested to hear what you plan to do. It would help me hugely!
Here is a photo of the Deepeeka model

And here is the only picture I can find of the original, which I believe is in Budapest.
Among the things I would like to have done is to replace the rivets which hold on the brow guard. They do look like the neck bolts on a certain monster. I'd also like to have all of the brass rivets replaced with copper rivets.
The helmet bowl doesn't fit my brain bucket properly, so it needs to be pushed inwards along the sides.
I observe that the brow guard is held in place over the forehead of the helmet via a small tab which projects inside the helmet proper. I wonder if this can be done away with.
Ave,
The other things I was thinking about were:-
-Cheek guards- the original fastening to the skull cap is different
-Possible- a holder on the neck guard
In the original, I think (?) I can just make out the shape of what could be the curved holder for hanging the helmet around your neck. But I'm not sure.
Other commenst? Of course, if someone else has another photo or has even seen the original this could all be sorted out! And Mrs Brittanicus would be not be persuadable to go to Budapest to see just one helmet!
