Leg VI ballista on \'Mail Call\' friday
#1
Avete, comilitones!

The Mail Call episode featuring Legio VI's new ballista will air this friday night on The History Channel (in the U.S.). Here's the blurb from the Mail Call website:

Airs on Friday, March 4 at 9:00pm ET

Decked out as a Roman legionnaire, R. Lee Ermey gets down and dirty with the Ballista--a 2,000-year-old spear-thrower that still packs quite a punch as Lee discovers when he takes out the "enemy"--an 8-foot-high inflatable teddy bear!

OK, "spear thrower" is not quite accurate, but you get the idea. If it sounds like fun, it was! Tune in if you can.
Ave frater Crispus,
I wouldn't miss it for the world! Your machine is beautiful. Are any of your team going to be in the episode?
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, draconarius, Secunda Brittanica

Yes, Metellus. Eight of us showed up for the shoot, of which five get camera time. Our Centurio, Caius Man, does most of the talking and explaining, while the rest of us work the beast.

I'll have a photo page on the ballista's construction and the Mail Call shoot after this weekend. In the meantime, there's a nice shot of the ballista and ballistari team on the home page of our website,
Saw you on "Mail Call". Wonderful!! Awesome!! And you got R. Lee Ermey into a tunic and hamata, too. Afterward, did you explain to him what a "crenel" is (crenelations are)?
Great show, and always good to us US legionaries on TV.
Thanks, Dave, Clavus, Theo et all! Glad you enjoyed the show!

Yes, Theo, we'll have the ballista, and will demo it to the public, if we can do it safely.

When are you arriving? Are you driving, flying, or what? In any case, You're invited to mess and bunk with us and join us on march-out Saturday/Sunday morning, too!

With your splendid Late Roman kit, you'll complement our timeline beautifully. We'll have everything from a Greek hoplite to a post-Constantinian milete!
I had to tape the episode, but I'm very glad I did! Congrats, it looked totally cool!
Looks like you guys had some fun trying to hit the stupid bear....Oooh Rah!

Yes, Andy, the whole thing was a real kick. Our frustration built as we kept bracketing the bear by a few inches one way or the other. When we finally hit it, watching the bolt go straight through the red heart was incredibly satisfying. Still, our pent-up rage was such that we gathered around the deflated corpse and stabbed it repeatedly with our gladii, just to make sure the hated thing would never rise again.
Careful you guys, it was recently revealed that Bambi grew up to be a U.S. Marine. Yes, it's true.
