"De reditu": a new roman movie (Italy)
#16
Titus, do you really think that making a film, even a low budget one like "De reditu" would be affordable for people like... (oh, maybe you have money, not my case! ) ?
My great uncle wrote a short play called 43 which featured a centurion visiting another centurion's tent, just after the invasion of Britain and sitting down for a few minutes to reminisce about their time ten years before in Judea. It played well on stage a few years ago and would be dirt cheap to film: two centuriones (one in armour and the other not), a slave, a tent, a couple of seats and a few things like cushions and campaign quality tableware, along with one or two legionaries or auxiliaries seen through the tent doorway and a few shouted commands in the background - no problem for even the smallest of 1st century AD Roman groups - and hey presto - a short film. Even a flashback of Christ on the cross wouldn't be too hard to do.
Really impressing, Titus.
I've never being involved in film making but I love cinema. The first thing needed for a film and for convincing possible sponsors or producers is a good screenplay. Without it, it would be like selling castles in the air. Writing and correcting a screen play (which language, Latin, of course?) takes its time and it should be the first step in the hypothetical process.
(Remember Tim O'Neil's 'Caldes Variana' project!)
Oh, I did not want to impress , I just liked to tell we should not start from the level 0 at all...

The screenplay for a 5 minuts short is easier to make than a 120 minuts full movie one, the problem is the core idea and the development possibilities of the story. The most the idea is strong, the most it will interest a possible sponsor/producer. Convincing the sponsor, it can be done like in the advertising: show the screenplay by images, catching immediately the attention with a great headline, the claim and the visual during the first three seconds, then quickly (less or more quickly in this case) convince with the screenplay body copy and visuals and finally sell with the pay off...

Oh yes, that is in a perfect world... Of course in the real one it's more complex, but finding an outsider sponsor is always possible... Anyway, to a good screenplay is to be added a serious financial plan, and the most the total is low, the most is better. A sponsor could be better than a producer because the producer can transform almost anything of the first design of the movie and will force the choice of director, actors, locations, actions, etc. so at the end, instead of a really alternative roman movie, it could become "The blind samurai and his gladius vs. Montezuma"...

Making something of never seen and totally different is absolutely important, using imagination to create a new kind of images for the world we want to show, a sort of micro-cultural shock.

After all, I'm talking of an about 50.000/70.000 euro budget just to cover the few costs. It's almost nothing in the movie making and in the commercials making. So, is it so impossible?
A beautiful dream that may become reality sometime...
Me must not give it up, but we should have a clearer idea on what we want first!
Anyway, don't forget to post here about "De reditu" if you can see it!
