Early 2nd AD Pugio Reconstruction ?
#1
Before I start posting, I have done some searching and I am haveing problems with the scabbard. I am going to do the Mougins scabbard but with different plates, the problem is the bottom of the scabbard is missing. I have seen the thread:
http://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat/thread-...s+scabbard
( By the way lovely work Wink )
was it like the one in the reconstruction with point tip or I have also seen a small disc, which is best for the period I am looking at, as the point type looks to be later in date Coptham court , Kunzing finds. I have seen quite a few of these scabbards with plates in but I cannot remmember the frame they where in Huh So any help will be most welcome Big Grin  The dagger is just about finished although not what you would think Pugio??, and the scabbard core and face plate is done just need to cut the openings out.
Many thanks in advance. ps also pmd Crispvs Big Grin

Hmm tiss quite for replys are well got to post. I  have made the blade from a pice of drop forged wrought Iron. It has a good carbon content as it blunted my sandvik hacksaw blade when cutting it Angry Rolleyes I am making the handle from Horn,

This blade is a best guess of a picture I have, will post soon of progress Wink

well I have finished scabbard so this is the fitting of the ring hangers,

This is the back, I just used simple nails to attach the rings,

I then thought what would throw the inserts of best and like Phil posted I agree this is what was possible done. If these were left just in iron rust would show very quick unless like gun barrels they were allowed to rust then polished another possibility, but I think blueing does the job very well Smile

So I hope you like Smile

Well I have finished the dagger a few weeks a go here it is;

The dagger is a copy of a one found the only difference is it had a iron hand guard, I did a best guess on the blade.
So I hope you like please ask any questions Smile

Very nice Tony, particularly the embossed detail.

There is only one modification I would recommend. On the original there are lines of raised dots to either side of the decorative fields. Without a close look at the original or a detailed report, I can't be sure but it looks to me as though they are lines of 'pearled strip' which have been soldered on (just like on the earlier Leeuwen sheath), which I am sure with your proven range of skills you would have no trouble reproducing.

Ad ha Crispvs that was one of the reasons I pmd you Wink So I did some research I had made the Copthall court Pugio years ago which has the raised dots, now I looked into these type of scabbard and found plain as well as dot punched,

This is the one I made for a customer.

This one without,

So I had a choice I went with the plain because to me the dot punch scabbard with Pugio looked closer to 3rd AD  but some of the Kunzing hoard shows without dot punch Undecided So I went with the fact earlier 1st AD open frame scabbards even decorated ones had no dots on. I did a best guess Smile
