Crossbows?
#1
The thread below me inspired this.

One day while walking down the street on fernindina beach i came across this bookstore. I engaged in a conversation with the propietor and he said that the Romans acquired the Crossbow form the Chinese..Moreover he said that the chinese regarded the Romans as barbarians?
Are there any truth in his words?

Salve,
The weapon seems to have developed independently both in China and the Greek world. In the latter bows were quickly replaced with torsion springs and increased in size to artillery pieces. In the former handheld models remained normal. Evidence for direct links between the Chinese and the Romans is very slight, though there are plenty wild theories around. Both Roman and Chinese cultures regarded themselves as superior and those outside as barbarians and they were/are not alone in holding such views.
