Camp Praefect
#1
As far as I can determine this position appears in the the army of the early empire toward the end of Augustus' reign. Is this correct? Were there examples of this officer position in the era of the Republic (e.g. Caesar's army)?

The republican era formations lacked the diverse hierarchy that developed in the imperial army. Tasks that later had separate people responsible for them were performed by the much more limited cadre of the legion. Thus the tasks of a praefectus castrorum would likely have been performed by the officers that later progressed to the position of camp prefect, either a tribune or centurion. It is notable that Arrianus appears to refer to the praefectus castrorum as hekatontarchès epi tou stratopedou, centurion of the camp.
