Just wondering if there were any other types of flags that were carried by the legion, other than a vexillum. (the typical "SPQR" flag seen in almost every Roman movie springs to mind). <p>"Only Trajan could go to Dacia."<BR>

could i also tack onto this thread, were legions only identified with one symbol, or could there be many, for Example ive seen writing of the II Adiutrix being indentified with the Boar, why would they have a symbol like that, the choice of the emporor? also are there any good books on the subject of Legionary and Auxillary symbols? <p></p><i></i>

I do recall that my eyebrows went up at the scene in Gladiator where the detachment arrived to kill Maximus' family. They seemed to be carrying an authentic (we think) secret police standard (frumentarii et/aut speculatores). Amazing how Hollywood will go for details and FUBAR the big picture completely...<br>
