Rosia gold mine threatens Roman site
#1
From David Meadows 'Explorator' I learned about a threat to a 'major Roman archaeological site' from a gold mining operation, I think in Romania. There is a petition that anyone can sign. I have no information on the Rosia site; anyone know what this is about?
It's the gold of the Dacians, Rich, there's nothing to be done.
Rome needs it..
Besides threatening archaeological sites, gold mining companies also managed to destroy a good half of the wildlife in a couple of affluents of the Danube, and in the Danube itaself, by discharging untreated cyanide --used to extract gold-- into the waters. The pollution has now reached the Danube delta, a very rich natural wildlife reserve. The effects on the ecosystems should be felt for ten years at least..

Edited by: Antoninus Lucretius at: 11/11/02 2:24:42 pm
