Salve!
Decided to take a break from making mosaics, and tamper with these, took me a while carving this out!,decided to make it from plaster as it would be easy to carve, needless to say it weighs as much as an Elephant! approx 1.5' high by 6'' wide, was basicly a bit of fun, especially with the inscription!,but I can dream can't I? I think I will make more,
Really nice! It looks like you tinted the plaster? The carving then would not take too much force then, but you did have to be careful about splitting it, right?

The 'tint' comes from using 2 different colours of plaster,so it kind of has a marble effect,I guess with some more experimenting I can get a more realistic effect, believe it or not,due to a lack of tools as I did this on a spur of the moment kind of thing,I carved it all out with 2 small screwdrivers!,it was extremely easy to carve, any cracks or small breaks only made it look 'aged' still,it was much fun making it,which is the whole point,I have photos of real altars,so I think my next one will be an accurate copy if I can!,then I have to build the temple.......!
FLAVIVS QVINTILIVS GALLVS

Thats awesome!!! I bet you could also make some scrapers in various shapes to help carve out different patterns and reliefs. This one looks so real!
