Amphora construction
#1
Since I have been as yet unsuccessful in finding an amphora supplier, I"ve been looking for descriptions of how they were actually made. Here in Alexandria, Va, there is an inexpensive art studio that you can join that has large kilns that can accomodate amphora sized projects.
I have gotten contradictory info on amphora construction, whether they were hand built by coil, slab built or wheel thrown. An archaeologist told me they were coil built, but that was one conversation.
The problem of holding up the internal while building the amphora I think I've solved: build a form like a half egg, and build top and bottom halves of the amphora around it, then merge them together with slip. I"ve not tried it, but the technique sounds simple enough. Any thoughts?
