Gatehouse Typologies
#1
This is a recent drone image of an unrecorded site in SE England. Left of centre is a villa trace (now HER recorded), there is a dark line (bottom left to top right) that appears to be a ditch. It appears to be part of an almost square enclosure of 3ha with four apparent breaks with dark stains that appear to be gateways with gatehouse structures. IF this is a Roman feature and IF the apparent structure is a gatehouse, are there any other examples of gatehouse plans that look anything like this?

Hello John,

The west gate at Alchester fort was excavated by Eberhard Sauer. The following article has plans and an artists impression. I'm not sure where in your image the Alchester gate might find a position.
