Walking the Appia Rome to Brindisi
#1
We are looking for 2 Roman hikers to walk the 530 km of the Appia with us www.appia-hicetnunc.com

On the 24 th of April 2022 we are leaving from the Roman Forum on an organised historical walk on the via Appia Antica from Rome to Brindisi, at the moment our group consist of 3 hikers; Anna Piergiacomi of Lucina Calzature,  Erik de Wagt president and Centurio of leg II Augusto in the Netherlands, and myself Robert Schmits vice-president of Legio II Consularis in Rome.

At the moment we are looking for 2 more companions to join us on this hike which will take more or less 34 days. We invite members and hikers of Roman Army Talk if they the feel up to walk the 530 km to to write us at] [email protected].  Please have a look at our website www.appia-hicetnunc.com

We will walk in Roman civilian clothes and on roman shoes made by Anna Piergiacomi, during our walk we will have interesting meetings in the towns on our route with Archaeologist and other people that are interested to make the Appia again a living hiking trail.

Of course, stops at famous wineries for example Villa Matilde, where they reproduce the famous Falerno wine, or at places where they make Mozzarella di Buffala and in the evening many good trattorias and restaurants.

Our hike is intended as a hike to revive the Appia and try to interest foreigners to consider also the Appia instead of Santiago de Compostela or other hiking trails. Tons of things to create and realize the Appia as a good indicated hiking trail still have to be done but we feel that the Appia as one of the first long paved roads in Europe where many iconic persons, like Julius Caesar, Augustus, Cicero, Apollodorus of Damascus, Hadrian, Traian, Saint Paul and Sant Pieter, Frederic II and millions of other important and non-important persons, have walked or travelled.

Our idea is to follow the hike done by the Italian journalist and writer Paolo Rumiz and 5 friends in 2015. After their hike a lot of attention was given to the Appia in Italy but not abroad, we want to bring international attention to the road and get people from all over the world to discover the Appia and the marvellous south of Italy.

We also started a crowdfunding https://whydonate.nl/fundraising/Appia-Hic-et-Nunc. In part the funds will be used for culture (our walk) but a big part we aim for 30.000 Euro will go Doctors without Borders to help people in need in these dire times.
