Where did the Legions keep prisoners?
#1
Say there had just been a battle, and the Romans took some of the enemy captive; Where would they keep them initially?
I can imagine them all being chained up and left in the open, if the army was on the constant move.
But say the Legion was stationed in a castra. Were there specific places designated as prisons?
And if so, what did they look like, and how long would the legion have authority over the prisoners before they were distributed throughout the empire?
