Roman Barracks
#1
Ave Civitas,

I have seen photographs of Roman army barracks, but I have never visited one.
So, I have a question for those fortunate enough to have visited one.

I assume that the army bunks had mattresses, but what were the mattresses made of?
I have slept on a straw tick and they are very comfortable and warm in the winter, cool in the summer.
So would I be correct in thinking that the mattress covers would be stuffed with straw?
Then, what would the mattress covers be made of?
I would guess canvas because it is durable and allow ventillation inside the straw.

As always, thanks in advance.
