It is more than likely that the bones etc vanished naturally over the past 2000 years.

Over 2000 years human bones have disappeared?  I know there are very old skeletons but intact. they found 2,000-year-old human burial pits with the skeleton still visible

What Crispianus said: depending on soil conditions, some bones may be preserved for a long time but in others, they quickly vanish. 

About the shackles, maybe he was sacrificed alive, the armour being part of the ritual. This was a normal thing in the area after all.
