Rare iron mask of Roman cavalry discovered in Adrianopol, Turkey
The mask of a Roman knight aged 1800 was discovered at a military ground of the 3rd century AD in Turkey. But this place is not located in the heart of the Roman Empire, but in the remote outpost of modern Turkey - the Adrianapolis.
Researchers from the Turkish University of Karabyuk discovered an 1800-year-old iron Roman face mask in a fortified building in the ancient city of Adrianopolis, near Paflagonia in the area of Eskipazar of the northern Turkish province of Karabuk. This place is believed to have been a Roman garrison, and it is located near the eastern outskirts of the great Roman Empire.
The city of Adrianopol, also known as Caesarea and Prosilemmen, is known for being the birthplace of two saints: Alipia the Columnus and Stiliana of Paphalagonia. The city was founded as the Adrianopolis in honor of Roman Emperor Adrian. The opening of the Calvary iron mask once again illustrates the Roman influence in this region of Turkey in the beginning of the 3rd century AD.
Archaeologists have been conducting excavations in Adrianopolis since 2003 and now they have discovered 14 separate buildings. The site's findings include "two bathrooms, two churches, a theater, a rock tombs, a monumental niche, a villa and an area," and a building that discovered the mask of the Roman cavalry.
The ancient city is often called the "Zevgma ю of the Black Sea" because of a large number of Roman-Christian mosaics. There are a lot of animals such as horses, elephants, panthers, deer and grifons. And all of this was discovered last year.
