Juan van der Roest 1957-2023
#1
Sadly Juan has passed away (Friday Jly 7th, 2032) after a short and fierce illness. Juan was only 65 years old.

Juan had been a Roman enthusiast from a very early age, taught by his mother in local excavations and long vacations in Spain. Having become an archaeologist, Juan eventually found his way into reenacting with Corbvlo and Fectio as Principate as well as a Late Roman soldier, but also doing a famous Batavian impression as well as an early medieval Frankish warrior - Juan was one of the founder members of the early Frankish model village Erve Eme near Zuthpen.

Juan was a great guy. He was always present, quietly doing his thing, often just sitting down to become the focus for many visitors, enjoying the attention and doing long explanations from a wealth of knowledge. He also shared that knowledge with many of us here, as well s doing stints with all the other Dutch Roman reenactment societies (Leg X Decima, Leg II AVG and Pax Romana).

Yesterday we were able to give him a great sendoff, his family requesting special attention to his reenactment career.
Juan, comrade in arms, good friend, we are going to miss you very much.

That's sad news. Thanks for posting this, and for the details of Juan's achievements.
