Was I in the military? Yep, Navy -- I worked in a tool room in VAQ-33, an EW Squadron. It was interesting, but there was a LOT of alchohol intake and boredom. I was stationed in Key West, FL, where all there was to do was drink, party and do illegal substances. Oh yeah, that and watch MTV all night long (this being back when MTV actually played music videos and not just rap garbage). Oh yes, and Key West is also the gay capitol of the East Coast of the U.S., and 'twas a big shock to a young guy from a small California town to see guys in dresses, making passes at you, etc. Certainly different...

Perhaps I shoulda went in the Army or Jarhead Corps, but I decided to be a squid. C'est la Vie! Would I do it again? Don't know... perhaps i would just go to college and get in on te Internet on the ground floor ;-)

Anyway, reenacting is more fun, no one can really yell at you, nor can they put you on bread and water for 3 days (which the Navy still can do). And last, if you get mad or someone is "un-nice" you can take your toys and go home ;-Þ Try that in the real military. Besides, the pay is better...
Boy, if you can get paid more for reenacting than what I make now (about $52,000) for writing orders and plans in a bare office in the Sinai, I'll resign my commission tomorrow. But hey, what am I thinking? I could be in Iraq! And probably will be, sooner or later. Only thing to wonder is which patch I'll be sewing on the right shoulder...
I'm retired Army. Armor branch, served in armor and cavalry units. 5 years with OPFOR at the National Training Center as a soviet type motorized rifle battalion commander (for the rest of the army to fight against) was my favorite time. Played soldier in the desert, learned how to fight, nobody really got killed. Teaching tactics in the Armor School to the Basic and Advanced course was almost as fun. Teaching cadets at West Point also great (my main job was as a staff officer for the Superintendent but I taught part time to keep some sanity). Served two years, two months, three weeks in Southwest Asia. I train soldiers now as a civilian contractor for the gov't.

Ack! I wish! No, I meant my piddly day job, and it sucks some too these days. I used to make about $48. but by moving back out here to the Socialist Republik of Kalifornia, I ended up taking a nasty pay cut ;-(

I just meant over the miniscule amount I made in the military... why don't we pay more for that? Let's take some money away from politicians!!! Ted Kennedy and John Kerry are rich, why do they need a salary?
Jenny, funny you mention the Rainbow Warrior.

Is this the ship that was sunk off New Zealand, at the north part of the Island? My girlfriend is there now, and mentioned going scuba diving on it. But she said it used to be some kind of warship before? That it derives it's name "Rainbow" because of all the oceanic corals and such living on it now.
Magnus/Matt
Hi Matt,

The Rainbow Warrior was the best known ship of Greenpeace, and it was sunk by the French secret service (because it protested against French nuclear testing in the Mururoa atoll) in the harbour of Auckland, July 10, 1985: www.splash.co.nz/rainbow_warrior.asp

Not so secret a service, because within a few days New Zealand police had arrested French secret service agents Alain Mafart and Dominique Prieur.. they served 2 years of a 10-years' sentence.

The wreck looks very nice for diving trips.
And New Zealand has three main islands: the North Island, the South Island and Stewart Island. Auckland Harbour (and Auckland come to think of it) is about two thirds of the way up the North Island.
There was in the Napoleonic army a man called Larrey. He was the chief surgeon in the Imperial Guard and like others like him he maybe considered one of the patron saints of army medics.
He was deeply respected by everyone, friend and foe alike.
It is said that at Waterloo, Wellington ordered an artillery battery to cease fire, lest they would hit Larrey, who happened to pass by within range at that moment. Then Wellington took off his hat and when asked why, he answered: "I salute Honour passing."
I read Gaius Decius Aquilius' post many times and I take off my hat.

Edited by: Antoninus Lucretius at: 3/25/04 5:10 pm

Me too, Antoninus,
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.
