tunic lengths
#4
Quote:It came up during our latest event; what was the customary length for tunics for citizens, soldiers or slaves? I thought citizen tunics were longer, and that only soldiers and slaves wore them above the knee. There was discussion on that, and someone had a reference that I didn't write down. Any thoughts on this?
Rich, from everything I've ever read, it was considered to be a fad and unmanly to have a tunica really long. Same w/ wearing pants or sleeves... My belief (which means squat) is that they simply pulled them up in their belts for differing tasks. Graham's book talks of pulling them up to possibly acheive the Rheinland folds and such... this would also work for doing larous tasks and it makes sense...
