So, Orlando plays a character similar to the one from Pirates?

Hmmm...this plus his major part in Troy, he has become a fixture of the period film. (Must like the costumes.):
Jesus Christ!!! This guy has the ability to influence the opinions of millions of people around the world, and he allows himself to write these stupid F'n stories which are deplorable reflections of reality. Unreal. He's got leading historians in the UK and Europe telling him he's distorting history!!! Yeah, let's portray one side over the other in a victorious light, and centre out one character that Bin Laden and Hussein both worshipped. What a dumbass. Someone please punch this guy in the head!!! And then this quote about Gladiator 2:

“The script is done. It's very simply the next generation. Roman history is so exotic that where you go next is taking the son, Lucius, somewhere.â€ÂÂ

That's Hollywood for you: money talks and b......t walks. It's all about economics..
Same with the crusades, really. Reading all the comments on those movie sites, when are people going to realise the crusades were not about religion, but about politics?
The knights and kings did not go there for their immortal souls (well, the lower ranks may have), but for the money. Genoa and Venice happily ferried them to the Holy Land, not for their place in Heaven, but to expand their hold on Meditteranean trade! Without these gentlefolk organising things, the masses that went along to make uo the Crusader Movement would never have gotten as far as the Balkans.
Look what happened to the children's crusade the only one not sponsored by kings or merchants - they were sold as slaves!
i welcome this, you have to admit the man has an eye for detail.....'Gladiator' revoluntized the look of the Legions...the first realistic portrayal...!
(the man even financed digs in Lazio where they discovered some of the new look armour i heard somewhere)

would be great to have more historically correct movies about our favourite period though...(crusades is boring!) rather than a 'what if..' movie as Gladiator was..

Gladiator was hardly a realistic portrayal of the Roman army, or anything else Roman for that matter. Saying that, I am still not as critical as many members of RAT on this subject because I know that this film was instrumental in geting people interested in the Roman army, and Roman history in general. I honestly doubt we would have even half as many RAT members (or new Roman renactors) if it had not been for this movie. I also doubt Deepeeka would have agreed to all of the Roman products I developed for them had it not been for the teeming masses out there interested in buying Roman military equipment if they had not been inspired by Gladiator.

thanks to Ridley/Gladiator, other producers now dare to make other historical(?) ancient films, like Troy, Alexander the Great and Hannibal. Even (gag) Lord of the Rings probably would not have been produced if it had not been for Gladiator.

But in a nutshell, just a few of the things wrong with the military equipment in gladiator include,
1. the cheap vacuform helmets are not a copy of any real Roman headgear, but instead pressed from a mold intended for 17th century lobstertail helmets
2. The linoleum lorica sementata did not attempt to duplicate any paticular type of real armor, but just had the vague look of a segmented cuirass.
3. Maximus' horse chamfron (head armor) dated to the 15th century. His, and other officer type armor/helmets were terrible.
4. Although reasonable pila were depicted, they were not thrown but simply used as pikes.
5. although the scuta were good (copied exactly out of my book), a more period emblem would have been better, and oval shields would have been in use as well.
6.Fanciful repeating crossbows and excessive pyrotechnics.
7. No evidence for the black Algemeine SS / Praetorian Guard outfits.
The list goes on and on.

I have little doubt this new project will be filled with historical inaccuracies as well, not to mention the very premise.

It is not that Ridley Scott wanted these things to be wrong. It is that there are many unscrupulous costumes suppliers that will assure the producer everything will be authentic, but the film people are too ignorant of the subject to realize they are not getting "the right stuff".
I'll put it straighter and shorter than Dan has done!
The only accurate Roman items in the whole Gladiator movie where a pair of glass beakers. The problem with them is that they were from a period about one hundred years earlier!
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

would that be a realistic display of the armour of a Roman Legionaire from Marc Aurel's era?
Except for the helmet and the shield. look at this link, and click the #13 picture, there is a very good impression of a Marcus Aurelius' legionary soldier, by Dan Peterson equipped.
