Do you fancy making the Heraclius outfit then?

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

I got it from Foyles bookshop a fortnight ago.

I have a view that when reconstructing something from iconography that if it looks right it probably is right.

There are some figures which look decidedly odd to me, the one with the chest armour in leather. I would like to see a better representation of the origin image it came from in colour ( a bit too much to expect in an Osprey I accept price wise etc ) .

I dont doubt the validity of the reconstruction, after all the Papal Guard look bloody daft to my eyes, its just that I got the impression that it was taken from one image and mentions in texts and just wonder if one ancient artists interpretation is helpful to us?

I just loved the Hun, teh fancy tunics and the long sleeved coat both of which reinforced by preference for late stuff !

Hello Conal

Yes, I know a few other people who have laughed out loud when they saw that figure, the officer of Ravenna Patrikios Obsequium to give him his correct title, A very 'art deco' looking helmet I thought, he reminded me of something out of the 1930's Flash Gordon series! Nevertheless he is no more bizarre than many other past military fashions, the Landsknechts spring immediately to mind. Of special note however with this figure is the military salute shown on a number of early Byzantine sculptures and a topic discussed at length elsewhere on this forum. One wonders how far back it originated?

Why? one of the least flamboyant figures in the entire book!

Yes a lot of people seem to like the Hun. And as he is not wearing Hun costume but Roman it is suitable for copying by late Roman re-enactors.

That is exactly why I dont doubt what you have done as fashion has no bounds ! The pom poms on the Papal Guard shoes :o I can understand flamboyance but what struck me was why go for leather rather than silver or gold plated metal ?

The Landsknechts are a good point in case as the vanity of a warrior can make for some outlandish costume. The uniform thread covers some of this but I haven't stuck my oar into that one as its such a wide subject.
