How many Greek reenactors are there?
#31
Quote:Hi,everyone. I don't know exactly where I stand on this poll. I started in Greek hoplite re-enacting(alone,unfortunately) and quickly ran into a dead end. I had a terrible time finding a hoplon anywhere that was affordable to me and greaves---well, I tried the ones by Dee. shown on some very reputable sites and--Have you ever seen them pictured any way except one forward and one back(showing the inside)? That's because they are all two right ones. They do not make a left. Try wearing them.I sent mine back. Thanks,Andy

Several of my brawnier friends have them, and they seem to be okay, apart from the giant size of them. But what the hell, Andy, surely no son of Georgia is going to let a little thing like that stop him? My shields should be on the market in the next couple of months (subtle hint to Andy's wife/girlfriend - you could buy him one for Christmas!) other than that, sew yourself a chiton and get your person over here and all things shall be well.

No, we are interested to meet other groups but after some problems with the roman group we tried to intigrat we actually regroup in an own thing.
Next year we want to make the first steps in public, and so we also hope to come to gatherings and events.[/quote]

So, does that mean you are no longer doing Hellenic and Macedonian stuff
and that you won't be coming to the festival?

Hi,Paul. Thanks for the reply. I sent my greaves back because the left one(actually exactly same shape as right) hit my knee inside but was fine on my right (if I only had two right legs)and the straps were in the wrong place.Fastened, they kept me from bending my knee. Maybe I could make some as in the hoplite website(I believe it was someone in the UK,not Matt Amt's) where he hammered his "on his legs" to finish shaping.YEOW! Anyway, thanks for the invitation. I have my "corinthian" helm, chiton, linothorax(although I cheated a bit, using modern materials)and spear and Spartan Laekonian sword(which is probably not right, either).I still love this period and would like to meet others.Andy

Khairete, oh Hellenes!

I thought I had already posted details of the event, but here goes:-

Date: Sat/Sun 3rd/4th June 2006 (destined to live forever in the annals of re-enactment).

Venue: Watford Boys' Grammar School, Rickmansworth Road, Watford.
Rickmansworth Road is the A412. If you're coming from Heathrow, you can pick this up from the M25 by taking the M40 towards London and leaving it at Junction 1, in the direction of Denham. You pass through Denham and Rickmansworth and the school will be on your left as you come into Watford.

Nearest airport: Heathrow. But the venue is easily accessible from Stanstead or Gatwick, so, if you can get cheaper flights to these, do it.
I live near Stanstead, and can easily commute to Watford.

Nearest Station: Watford (Metropolitan Line).

Camping overnight Saturday will be possible in the school grounds. If you don't have/can't bring a tent, let me know and i will try to arrange a marquee for those willing to "rough it" in company with others. I'm negotiating for Friday night as well, but I'm also trying to find people willing to put up re-enactors for free in their own homes. The difficulty is that very few of the English re-enactors who will be attending the event actually live near London. Preference will be given to re-enactors from overseas - the greater the distance, the higher the priority.

We may be asked to contribute to the Watford Civic Festival, which would entail marching out of the School into Cassiobury Park and putting on a drill display.

A Mycenaean chariot could be appearing, but we need to hear from someone with an experienced pair of carriage ponies, who would be willing to re-train them to chariot. I know a bloke who could stand and pose next to the driver...

If anyone has any further questions, please ask.

Remember, if you're a student of Ancient Greek or Ancient Greece, and you live far away, you could apply for the grant from the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies. You can submit letters of application (c.v. and 2 refs.; one academic, one character) to me via e-mail, in the first instance at <[email protected]>.

So, Tiberius, is you comin' o' is you ain't?

Here in the US there was recently a documentary on a history channel about Helen, and went into detail about some of the tactics of the era. An English gentleman had reconstructed a Mycenaean and Hittite Chariot to be driven around on a field somewhere in Turkey, where they shot the scene. I'm curious if this may be the same fellow? For the life of me, I can't remember his name, but he supposedly specialized in Ancient weaponry...

I wish I could go. I'd love to show up in my Warrior VaseMycenaean kit, which will be finished by that time (before I move on to my next Mycenaean panoply!) But, it's too short notice for me!

If the event goes well, will there be plans for future events of the same calibre?

Cheers!

Greetings Paul,
no we still reenact or work at our stuff for Hellenic, Thracian and Macedonian.
And yes, we would like to meet you, but i m not sure if we are "showable" till the meeting and that we have the time.
It would be nice if you can send me the dates per PN and i ll give them around to our people. Than i can tell if and how many of us come.

Gregory, if you were watching "Helen of Troy", presented by Bettany Hughes (which only aired here yesterday!), then the chariot man was Mike Loades, a specialist in historical combat who gets a lot of work on TV and film. I haven't contacted him, and it may be that the chariots don't actually belong to him, but I'll give it a go. I'm very sorry to hear you can't make it, but yes, there will be more events of this kind to follow. If we all give it our drive and enthusiasm, this event will be remembered as the foundation for a whole series of large-scale, quality displays.

Tiberius, you've got seven months- you can do it! Talk to me about what you need to ensure your appearance. Dates per PN? I don't understand.
It's the 3rd/4th June.

Gioi, I'm working on having one new chariot built at the moment, and I still need to find a team to pull it. If we can get one, I will try to get as many people a ride in it as I can. As to cavalry work, it is important to be in good training, especially for Greek cavalry, as you don't get a saddle or stirrups!

Stefanos, you'll need very little specialist skill to ride in a chariot, but fighting from it in a manner that doesn't endanger you, your team or the public would require some practice, in my experience!

Salve Paul,
dates mean, from - to (in this case you said 3rd and 4th june), where, what does it cost in case of own "bring in", who will be there already and what is on schedule (that we can plan what we have to bring from our stuff and what we can leave home) and so on.

I ll bring, as soon as i know this to our people so they can decide.

Thx and greetings

I did not said that I drive the chariot. But I will device ways of making my self fit to attempt to fight from it. As for horse riding since it is a big issue I will advise only 30 days before the event if I can ride safely bareback.
If there is anyne who can do it safely we might stage a horseman with "Hamippos" demonstration. I feel fit enough to try it. Paul knows that I have never been accused of sanity!!!
The thought that I will meet persons from the forum in reality is a great inspiration. Hope toy see you all there!!
Kind regards

I believe that's what I must have been watching. I must say I was rather upset at their reconstructions of the figure-of-eight shields and such, which they made flat. That contradicted the very deep construction method shown on a few little miniatures of the shields... But, other than that (and using the spears like lances from chariots, which most of us into the stuff don't think really happened!) it was quite a well put on show, and the chariots looked excellent!

I hope to make it to the next large event you all put on, as a Mycenaean. The outfit I'm just now finishing is my first one, and is very ahistoric in it's construction methods and materials, with everything being brass, no casting, and the clothing being modern fabric that is machine-sewn, with fabric painted designs on it!

But, I'm already launching into my second attempt, which will have all hand-sewn items, wool stitched to the tunic for the patterns, black dyes for the little designs on it, and all leather/bronze armor and cast bronze weapons. It will be quite a kit!

Can't wait to share it at a big event with the likes of this one... I'd try to make it in June, but I'm only turning 17 this coming Friday, and am taking a trip to Vienna with my high school's chamber choir this March. My parents would think it absurd for me to go to Europe so soon afterwards!

Cheers!

-Gregory-

(p.s. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to vote on the polls around here... Is it that new users don't get this option, yet? Help!)
