Suppose they held a war and nobody came?

If I can organise a Greek event, next year, in Britain, which of you would attend (as exhibitors, rather than visitors)? I would be basing it on Hoplites of the Classical Period, but would hope for contributions from re-enactors of Persians, Scythians and Thracians, and Peltastoi and Psiloi, as well as from people specialising in earlier and later periods, probably from Minoan Crete up to the Battle of Pydna. Those who could contribute academic or craft insights would be as welcome as re-enactors. Amateurs of Greek sports of all kinds (especially Pankration) are also invited.

Anyone wanting to stage plays would be particularly welcome.

Hands up who wants to play.

Love to, but no way I can, unfortunately. I'll be going to England this fall for a Bronze Age sword course and festival, and can't even afford that! The budget is going to be worse than tight for a couple years more.

HAVE FUN, though! Khairete,

It has begun. I have started contacting potential hosts for the Hoplite Gathering. Initially, I'm going to try for a date in 2006 (because I'm SOOOO excited!). The Hoplite Association's representative has agreed to work with us, and to work with other groups from the UK and overseas.
Start packing your bags!

ZEUS SOTIR NIKI! Indeed!

It would be good to come, but I think we ( www.ludus.org.uk ) are a bit late period for you guys. We have been planning on tryingto get some pankration equipment together, bu this again would be the Roman versions, even our efforts to look at earlier republican gladiators would be a bit late for you, can you see this as useful to you?

Do you have any dates at the moment?

Dear Gashford,

I'm keen to have contributions from re-enactors of contemporary civilizations, so, if you go back as far as the Punic Wars or even the Battle of Pydna, you'd be in. I'll set a formal time-line in my next posting.

The event would probably either be early or late-season (May/June or Sept./Oct) in order to attract school visits.

May/June would be better, as schools are just letting out over here in the States, and we young guys would be able to use the trip across the pond as our summer vacation allotment. Just an idea. I know that I'm out in Sept/Oct cause I'll be in the middle of the school year along with the college courses I'm taking on the side.

Just my 2 cents.

A very valuable two cents' worth, Adam! It seems to me that our October break would be too late in the year, so I'll push for either our second May Bank Holiday (coincides with a US public Holiday - Labour Day?) or a weekend in the second semester of the Summer Term. I'd value your two cents in this, too! Does this constitute an acceptance of my invitation? Big Grin

Hi, everyone,

I have made contact with some French re-enactors who have agreed to participate. Their specialism is music, though they will participate in other activities. They are also film-makers, so I'm hoping we might make a film record of the event. It keeps getting better!

Mr. Allen,

The best I can do is speak for the guys in my age group over here (I'm 17). If the event could be scheduled on one of the major holidays, then it would allow students over here a better chance of making it over to England. The summer is truly the best time to have any kind of event like this in my opinion.

As for acceptance of your invitation, I'll have to see. Given school (I'm doing both highschool and college courses this year), money (I work as an archivist at the local museum unpaid, so I don't have a major income), and whether or not I can get off that weekend, my attendance is tentative. I also have to work on getting my kit together, as I have been planning to start ancient stuff for awhile, but I'm busy working on my half million other impressions at this time. If I can somehow make it, it'll probably be as a civilian seeing how I'm a fat guy (I don't deny it), though I have started trying to learn slinging (with the help of slinging.org). Armor is definitely out of my budget.

Cheers,
Adam

Placing the event in the holidays would present some difficulties. When does the main Summer vacation begin, for you?

Right, the Time Line for our Festival will run from 2000BC - 168BC, so we can include Minoans (if there are any!) and Republican Rome. So all you Romans who have the lorica hamata and early scutum can come and play. But don't forget to bring any Greek kit you have, as well - this is primarily about Ancient Greece. At the very least, we can pretend your tunica is a chiton and draft you into the peltastoi!

Plans for this event are becoming firmer. The weekend of 3rd/4th June is a strong possibility, as it is the end of a week's break for UK schools and could enable us to receive visiting contributors from as early as the weekend before (though this is not yet confirmed). The venue is planned for Watford, which will give visitors easy access to the rest of London (inc. British Museum) for sight-seeing.

Contributors who have provisionally agreed to come:-

The Hoplite Association (UK) . 25 members (approx.) Drill, combat.

Time Tarts Re-enactment Group (UK) 12 Persians(?) Drill, combat.

Serge Besanger (Fr.) 5-6 men. Music, drill, possibly combat.

Stefanos Skarmintzas (Gr) Drill, combat.

Daniel Mouskis (UK) Greek dance, combat, drill.

Watford Boys' Grammar School Classics Dept., (UK) Classical Greek,
possibly drama, drill and combat.

Please spread the word about this event amongst any potentially-intereted parties who may not have access to this site.
