What event had the biggest impact on your country
#1
This is my last topic post this weekend I promise. What event had the biggest impact, or a turning point in the history of your country. Mine would be world war two as it established the usa as superpower. Im sure everyone will come up with a lot of different ideas.

I think that WW2 had a very big impact on, at least, entire Europe. Events like the 80-years was and the "golden century" of NL perhaps shaped our country, but these are almost 3/ 4-centuries ago.
WW2 for NL i think.
Professionals built the Titanic, amateurs built the ark
I would like to add a couple to the fray for the UK.
Norman invasion 1066.
Peasants Revolt 1381.
The Battle of the Somme 1916.

My birthday 1970. Although I have yet to do anything of historical notoriety, I feel confident that I might do anytime soon
All the best.
Graham Ashford

American Football (or "catch-the-egg") looks totally silly with those helmets, shoulderpads, strange pants, etc.
---------------
American football is neither a sport, nor a game. Just some images of cortisone-fed mutants they put between commercials on TV.
There's more action on an Oprah Winfrey show and not as many commercials.
And why the helmets and armour? Afraid of being hurt?

not a sport, not any action. Have you ever watched the game. I have been going to college football games my whole life. The paegentry of it is unbelievable. And how would you like it if you were the quarterback, the guy that throws the ball, and had to deal with several 300 lb. plus guys coming after you with only one thought, knocking the life out of you. And the superbowl is the one of the most, if not the most watched sporting event in the world.
Why are the French streets lined with trees... a different form of them, there are so many insane football fans it would scare many europeans if they went to a game. There are some die hard fans out there. Maybe not to the degree that some european soccer fans get with their riots, thats because there is still basketball, baseball, and hockey.
Why are the French streets lined with trees... I understand that US Football has much more organised than 'just' a game. Is that the case?
I don't mind the Oscar Wilde quote, but I can see how some people might be offended by the "French tree" comment.
