pugio frogs: cast or sheet brass?
#16
Quote:That might depend on how big the pugio is and what type of sheath it is carried in. Unfortunately the originals are far from standardised in their proportions.

Confusedhock: Well if you're referring to the rare lead or depleted uranium versions I suppose one might consider a pugio heavy... And you're still not going to damage a frog made of 0.064" thick brass

Matt,

I didn't actually intend to imply that the weight of a dagger and its sheath would damage the frog. I was merely pointing out that some Roman daggers were considerably bigger (and presumably heavier) than many people would imagine, and even moderately sized reconstructions tend to weigh a belt down quite considerably on one side. Not, of course that this normally results in any damage to the frogs.
Sorry if I unintentionally caused any confusion.

Ah, I see- it did seem that way because my statement was in response to the question of whether or not thick sheet brass would be strong enough. Of course you're quite right that there's a lot of variation in pugio size and therefore weight- my apologies if what I wrote seemed flippant, I was just kidding
