A quick question - why the shoe over the spearhead? Is that for reasons of preservation or law?

Shoe? Oh, the spear sheath .. ! Since I was using my spear as a tent pole, I thought it best to put a leather sheath on it or risk getting stabbed in the face at night. Also it prevented accidental injury on the march, getting the spear in the face while you are walking wouldn't be nice. And it stopped it getting wet and rusty in the mist Smile

Check out the 'Hadrian's Wall' section on our web site: www.romanarmy.net . Incidentally, Peronis is the auxiliary soldier in the olive coloured long sleeved tunic and I can be seen adjusting my shield harness in one of the earlier photos and again outside the Centurion pub (I'm not the centurio - that's Len Morgan).
