The enemy is less likely to get wind of an advance of cavalry, if the orders for march were passed from mouth to mouth rather than announced by voice of herald, or public notice. Xenophon

That's great! I'm glad you had some success. As you said, your shelter does look a little cramped... its amazing what you can do with so little.

Hope the weather was kind to you.

We-ell...
Considering I did not bring enough rope, fabric or knowledge of knots.. I think we did just fine.I think it was a nice little shelter, when with enough canvas it would even have been cosy. the method of securing it with just a thong, a pebble and a little stick worked like a dream. With my francisca doubling as a hammer I nailed it down perfectly.

I had just a few metres of wool with me, and that was nowhere wide enough for the purpose. But for a one-man shelter, it would have worked (with appropriate fabric, like canvas, of course).
The weather was fine!

So..when will you be going on that march?

You shouldn't wear hobnails then, it's not compulsory for our period...

I do have some sandals I can wear if the boots come apart (I made them ...). But they are very thin, not great for walking the wall up and down those high crags.

Hey, no pain, no gain! I'm sure everything will be fine. We're just debating the fine points of food, what to take, what to eat in camp the night before, how much alcohol to take for the Saturday nigh - how to carry it Confusedhock:

I will take pictures.

The 2 day walk on Hadrian's Wall is over - and the three Late Roman soldiers survived!

Feel free to read about it (and see a few pictures) at: [url:jrcpvake]http://www.geocities.com/zozergames/roman6.html[/url]

What an experience!!!!! Confusedhock:

What an adventure!
Thanks, Paul, for sharing all of that with us.
A quick question - why the shoe over the spearhead? Is that for reasons of preservation or law?

When eighteen of us marched the length of the Wall last year in full kit with full equipment no-one raised any objections. Even on those days when we marched light we still carried all of our weapons and there was never any hint from the authorities that this might be any problem.

Well done on your effort by the way. I know just how tough some parts of your march must have been.

This was because all local police were notified of our intentions and programme months prior to the walk.
