Cause they and their overseas descendants (among whom, I believe, is our all powerful being who in her wisdom started this poll) think they're a continent to themselves.
Greets
I want desperately to say something pert, but I won't -- since that might veer us into the forbidden land of Current Events.

Here are less tempting alternatives:

- I had a 5th choice and decided against separating "Canada" and "America"
- I was curious to know how many Great Britons we have, as it seemed to be a lot (and poll results prove it). Rule Britannia!
- Jasper's correct, as usual. I'm Anglo-Saxon by extraction. (hey, a rhyme!)
Cor, not many Aussies and Kiwis are there - stands to reason I suppose we are the farthest away!

I'm pretty sure, if memory serves, that Tim O'Neill (Thudareiks) is an Aussie.
Jenny, as a Canadian of British extraction, I thoroughly support your decision to give the British Isles its own category rather then doing so for Canada. At least Canadians and Americans speak the same language--sort of--most of the time...eh?
"I am an admirer of the ancients, but not like some people so as to despise the talent of our own times." Eh!

In fact, the only way I can tell most Canadians from Americans is the "ou" sound you all make -- the only place Americans make that sound is in Virginia, and as Canadians don't pronounce anything else like Virginians, it's a giveaway.

Just have a suspected Canadian say "out and about." If it sounds like "oot and aboot," you've found one!
Hmmm, well it's not actually the same across Canada. The further east you go, the more noticeable the 'ou' pronunciation thing is. We mid-westerners don't have any accent at all, don't you know.
"I am an admirer of the ancients, but not like some people so as to despise the talent of our own times." Being an american having lived throughout the nation I have noticed that there is a bigger variance in how the west coast and the east coast speak, than in the difference between how the typical american speaks compared to the canadian, with the exception of the french in quebec.

Rekirts is correct, you only get that strong "ou" sound out east, in the Maritime provinces. I find that where I live, in Southeast Ontario, you can't tell the difference between one of us and someone from say, Pennsylvania, or any western half of New York.

I just got back from New Jersey/Philladelphia this week-end, and there was only a slight discernable accent with my buddy's g/f who is from NJ.
Why is Britain considered part of Europe? I always thought it was stand alone..it's the only country in that region who's native tongue is English...hahahaha. That sounded funny.
Magnus/Matt
British native tongues are Cornish, Welsh and Scots Gaelic .... because in general the English (who are in charge) only speak English the "natives" speak it too .

That is also why Britain is not part of Europe ... they wont on principle speak silly foreign languages .

Its amusing listening to you talking about regional accents over hunders of miles...towns in the UK only 20 miles apart have strikingly different accents!!
I would contest the statement that the British native tongues are Cornish, Welsh etc! I was born in St Albans, Herts, so I'm a native to this island and my mother-tongue is English (since I was born in England).

You are right to dissagree ... you are native to England and your mother tongue is English but "Mother Tongue" is different to "Native Tongue" and your point helps to illustrate the enigma that is the UK.

Remember Britain is different to England Try telling people in certain parts of Wales that English is their native language.

My mother tongue is English and I was born in England and am essetially culturaly English but by blood line has no English ancestry in it however my Family lines are Native to Britain with a bit of Polish thrown in. So what is my mother tongue ?

Am I a stranger in a strange land or have i just re-occupied a little bit of Britain ?

Daft I know but it amuses me
